When we were safe, I asked Tom Sawyer,
"Where are the diamonds you promised us,and the Arab and the Spanish merchants, and the elephants?"
"There are loads of them really," he explained to me,"but you can't see them. It's all done by magic. The magicians don't like us and so they changed everything into a Sunday-school outing just disappoint us."
"Can't we attack those magicians?'
"Of course not. If we tried to, they'd call up a lot of devils who would cut us into little pieces before you could say 'Jack Robinson'. Don't you know that they're as tall as trees and as big as church."
"Well, couldn't we get some devils to fight on our side?"
"How?"
"I don't know. How do the magicians get them?"
"Oh, for them it's easy. They just rub an old lamp or an iron ring and the devils come rushing in, with thunder and lightning and clouds of smoke. They bow. 'Master," they say,"We have come to carry out your commands.'
