Dear Tom,
Thank you very much for inviting me to your birthday party tomorrow and I have been longing for giving my sincere wishes to you on that special day. However, I am terribly sorry that I cannot be there because of a matter of some urgency. This afternoon I got a call from my parents telling me that my sister had been hospitalized. Both of my parents are busy at work, so I have to go home in a hurry to take care of her. I am sure you can understand this. I would like to say sorry again and wish you a happy birthday as well as a successful party.

In the picture, a boy is absorbed in chatting on line. When his aged mother asks him to have a chat, the boy responds impatiently: “Don’t you see I am busy now?” Puzzled and disappointed, the mother cannot understand why her son is talking to a computer.
The simple dialogue between the son and his mother reveals the fact that youngsters nowadays prefer to talk to the anonymous over the internet rather than people around them. Interpersonal communication seems to be out of favor with the young generation in the internet age. Two reasons can be concluded about the phenomenon. Firstly, the privilege of anonymity allows the young to say whatever is innermost, while the face-to-face contact is superfluous to a certain extend. Secondly, because of the age gap, parents are less likely to know what their children are thinking and feeling, which makes the rare conversations boring.
However, on the one hand, chatting on the internet has many hidden dangers. You cannot really know a person well only by reading the words he types, because he is probably showing what he wants to be rather than what he really is. On the other hand, for lack of real life communication with elders, peers and youngers, young people may lose the opportunities to learn to be courteous, cooperative and friendly. Therefore, I wish interpersonal relationship would be strong enough to defend itself against the temptation of the Internet.

Nowadays, more and more people, especially in big cities, become interested in buying lottery tickets. According to chart 1, averagely 70 percent of those polled in the survey, held in three big cities, claimed to have dreamed of winning the big prize of five-million yuan. 85 percent of those polled in Guangzhou had had such a dream, compared with 65 percent and 60 percent, respectively, in Beijing and Shanghai.
The attraction of buying lottery tickets is obvious. The winner can get the biggest profit for the future with only a small investment. It realizes the beautiful dream of every participant-to be richer and to improve living standards. As is shown in Chart 2, should they win a big lottery, 81.3% of people would buy a new house, 61.9% would buy a car, and 61.7% would save the money for the education of themselves or their kids. And a great proportion of people say they would put the money in the bank or use it for investment or touring. Despite all the attractions brought by the lottery buying, it has also come under criticism. Some regard it as a kind of gambling, which is a potentially addictive behaviour.
In my opinion, buying lottery tickets is not so bad as some people think. Instead, it is good for society by creating new jobs and representing an important source of income for charity and sports causes. Of course, it is not a means of making money for individuals we should encourage, because the result is hardly predictable. Therefore, we should take a positive but cautious attitude towards lottery buying behavior.

Dear Sir or Madam,
On October 10 this year, I purchased a red mobile phone, Mora 1080, in one of your chain shops named East Division.
I regret to tell you that only three days after the purchase, I found the phone couldn’t work normally. It shut itself down automatically several times a day. I returned it to the store to exchange for a new one, as I had a 3 year extended warranty for it. However, the assistant from whom I had bought this machine refused to replace it and even told me to repair it myself.
Would you please let me know when your store would replace it for me or how you would like to deal with this? I appreciate you if you can telephone me at 32165426.

As we can see in the picture, a horse is starting the first step in his journey vigorously. The prancing horse, together with the line of words beneath that every journey begins with the first step, implies the importance of beginnings, and the necessity of getting off to a right start in anything that one undertakes.
As we all know, the foundations of a building must be strong, or else the whole structure will fall down someday. The pioneering of any enterprise always contains the soul of it, in which is wrapped the whole motive, purpose and plan of the venture. The success of autumn crops depends on the initial steps taken in the spring. Therefore, it seems that the beginning point is dynamic and alive and often more important than any other point in the journey. When asked about the key to success, a successful author replied that the most helpful thing was to start writing. Without taking the first step, potential genius will contents itself with mediocrity. Only by trying, the first can produce the second, the second the third, and so on to the very goal.
In sum, there is a magic potential in the first step taken toward a successful end in view.
As we can see in the picture, a horse is taking his first step of a journey. This beginning seems to be hard and painstaking, but every journey begins with the first step. No matter what we are going to do, we should start with our action.
Though planning and dreaming is important, action is essential for our success. Maybe after all the efforts we still can’t accomplish our aims, but taking no action can get us nowhere. For example, some students often complain about their bad luck when getting low marks in an exam; however, the reason for their failure is that most of them don’t listen carefully in class nor review their lessons after class. By contrast, those who get high marks have devoted much time and effort to learning. The most accomplished people in the world always have a history of making perseverant efforts, as Madam Cury and Edison did as scientists, Beethoven and Bach did as musicians, Marx and Confucius did as philosophers.
In short, no pains no gains. Let us put our plans and aims into action. Only after great effort can we get what we want and live an accomplished life; otherwise, our life will be full of failure and disappointment, which is surely no one’s choice.

Statistics from the Supreme Court shows that the number of closed cases over the disputes of intellectual property has been on the rise since 1997. In 2005, the number reached 11,390, much more than those in the previous years.
The figure is of great significance in many respects. First, it points to a healthy tendency that Chinese people are more and more aware of the importance of intellectual property, and watchful of any infringement on their rights. It shows the growing sense of legal obligation among the people, which is the fruitful outcome of the stringent efforts by the government to strengthen legal system over the past years. Secondly, the figure indicates that there is still a long way to go for the government to educate the people and disseminate the legal knowledge. Many people now still do not realize the serious results of their act of infringement, like pirating, plagiarizing, etc. Driven by profits and personal interest, they disregard and violate laws and regulations, that in part explains the increasing number of cases over the disputes of intellectual property in recent years.
China is emerging as a growing economy that calls for a well-regulated environment for its development. Only laws can provide and safeguard that kind of environment. We are happy to see through the example by this chart that the government and the people are working together to strengthen the laws.

How vivid and accurate the picture is in describing one of the most serious social problems concerning college students in China! As is shown in the picture, a college student, held in his father’s arm, concentrates on the book he is reading, whereas his father, sweating, carries him with great difficulty. It clearly reveals that in current China, college students are, more often than not, a burden for their parents to shoulder rather than independent young adults, as they should be.
It is widely known that recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in various fees charged by the universities. High tuition fees, plus lodging and other expenses, have become a heavy burden for university students’ parents, many of whom are farmers or laid-off workers. Parents’ worries also come from the heavy dependency of today’s college students, many of whom are bookworms depending on their parents for everything. Some of them even send clothes home for their parents to wash. In their mind, it is indisputably parents’ duty to take care of them.
In my opinion, college students should be educated to stand on their own two feet. And government and education institutes should also help to relieve the parents’ economic burdens. Fortunately, some measures have been taken. For example, banks distribute loans to students; universities cut down charges on poor students and provide them with part time employment. As a result, we have witnessed some improvements but still there is a long way to go.

As is shown in this picture, two doctors are trying hard to squeeze a sheet, but out of our expectation, what they get from the wet sheet is not water but money.
Obviously, this picture implies a horrible phenomenon in China: what hospitals care most is earning money instead of saving lives. It is a secret from no one that some hospitals nowadays are making profits by prescribing more expensive medicines to patients or arranging unnecessary medical examinations for them. They get such a high profit that it seems they’ve got the license to print money. What these hospitals forget is one crucial principle that should be observed as their doctrine—hospitals should be the right place to save lives rather than somewhere to make undue profits.
Then how to avoid a further worsening of this tendency has become a hotly discussed topic in media. One measure is to make the purchasing process more transparent, thus to bring down the price of medicines. Moreover, the patients should be well informed so that they may buy cheaper medicine which has the same effects as the expensive one. We have confidence that, if sound measures are taken, hospitals will become a much purer place in the near future.
