  Dear Senior School Parents and Families,

  親愛的家長們,

  As we complete the first half of the first semester, we review how students are progressing and reflect on what the students have accomplished. With a tailored syllabus for each English level, we need to continuously focus on their needs and how their English supports their other subjects, especially for the VCE. Basic structured classes ‘I do’, ‘We do’ and ‘You do’ are at the forefront of our methodology. We have produced a 200 page general vocabulary workbook, which all teachers use at the A1, A2 and B1 levels to support their teaching.

  For year 10, A1+ level students – 13 classes of intensive Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Grammar and Vocabulary, teachers focus on the students ‘natural’ acquisition of the English language where students are taught structures in grammar starting at the basic level, backed up with vocabulary to support the writing, speaking, listening and reading.

  對于10年級的A1+水平的學生來說——我們一周有13節(jié)課時緊鑼密鼓地進行精讀、寫作、聽力、口語、語法和詞匯等的教學和練習,教師關注學生對英語的自然習得,并基于此,從基本水平開始講語法結構,用詞匯支持學生的寫作、口語、聽力和閱讀。

  Brief description of the focus of the year 10, 5 + 5 + 3 Classes:

  In the ‘Writing & Speaking’ classes, students learn how to write descriptive paragraphs structured with a topic sentence, supporting details and a conclusion. They also practice describing one of their peers, where other students have to guess who he or she is according to the information they are given. All students really enjoy these types of classes especially as it engages their senses and all learning skills. Using adjectives to describe people, students are encouraged to think and analyse for themselves and one way to begin is by sharing their own experiences.

  For year 11, over 45% of the students (B1+ and B2- students) are focusing on IELTS preparation at the 5.0 – 6.5 level. In addition, they are also taking academic vocabulary classes to support their future academic requirements.

  對于11年級來說,45%以上的學生(B1+和B2-水平的學生)專注于雅思5到6.5水平的學習。此外,他們還有學術詞匯課,以支持他們在以后的學術學習。

  At year 11 B1 and B1+ level, students have been concentrating on describing personal qualities – both positive and negative. As we know, using adjectives can add significantly to general and academic writing and supporting the word building and word formation which is vital in all B1+ and above classes. Students have been spending time describing people they know (friends, family, famous people, etc.). Not only have they been using their newly acquired vocabulary but giving reasons for their choices. Overall, this gives their writing much added depth and encourages students to think critically. Some students are working on a ‘how to’ essay topic of their choice using the appropriate text type. By choosing their own topics, students are able to take some ownership of their learning and explore the vocabulary of topics they have an interest in. ‘How to’ paragraphs are a very common text type which will serve students well in their future studies.

  Some year 11 students have also been working very intensively on their ‘Speaking and Writing’ projects in preparation for their powerpoint presentations which will be formally assessed at the end of November. The main focus of the work has been on introducing students to the skills required 1) when researching a topic and 2) to the speaking and writing skills required when making presentations. The main objective of this exercise is to prepare students for real life situations in both their academic and professional lives in the future.

  In addition in year 11, the 5 + 3 intensive grammar and vocabulary classes focus has been on the future by using ‘be going to’, ‘will’ and the ‘present continuous’ using ‘ing’ and the past using regular verbs ‘ed’. For preparation students also share among their peers with ‘fears’ one topic which is important for building confidence and being able to think critically and analyse through self-awareness.

  此外,對于11年級的學生來說,5+3模式的強化語法和詞匯課主要集中于將來時時態(tài)的學習和練習,并能正確使用“be going to”、“will”和“be doing”表示將來時,規(guī)則動詞在詞尾加“ed”等。同時,學生還與同齡人分享“恐懼”這一話題,這對于建立自信、通過自我意識進行批判性思維的思考和分析很重要。

  The ESL programme continues to focus on the needs of each student at their level and to challenge them appropriately. The focus and support to the students in each class is, either the teacher is addressing the ‘whole class’, a group of students or an individual student’. Group work and pair work are fundamental in second language learning and all ESL teachers are trained and experienced in this method.

  英語項目組持續(xù)關注每個等級學生的英語需求。我們減少了班級學生人數(shù),并且還會有兩名新老師的加入。這樣做的目的是,通過小班教學,使得老師能夠更有效地幫助到學生,并為他們提供有針對性的指導。

  All ESL classroom teachers follow Haileybury’s strict teaching guidelines of ‘I do, We do and You do.’
