李華今天請(qǐng)Larry 到家里來(lái)一起看電視轉(zhuǎn)播的世界杯比賽。今天是美國(guó)隊(duì)對(duì)
捷克隊(duì)。李華會(huì)學(xué)到兩個(gè)常用語(yǔ)：make a big stink和to be creamed.

    （sound of knocking door）

    LH：請(qǐng)進(jìn)來(lái)！ Come on in ， Larry！

    LL： Oh ， hey there， Li Hua ， I see the game has started. What's
the big stink ？

    LH：球賽剛開(kāi)始。你說(shuō)這兒有臭味？我沒(méi)有聞到什么臭味呀！

    LL： No ， I don't mean your apartment is stinking. I was asking why
the soccer players are making a big stink. Big stink means making a big
fuss or complaining.

    LH：噢，你是問(wèn)電視上這些球員在吵什么？嗨，美國(guó)隊(duì)踢進(jìn)了一個(gè)球，可是
沒(méi)有得分，因?yàn)椴门信卸ㄊд`，所以就吵了起來(lái)。

    LL： So ， the players are mad， and the U.S. soccer coach is making
a big stink by arguing with the referee.

    LH：是啊，美國(guó)隊(duì)個(gè)個(gè)氣得火冒三丈。美國(guó)教練通常比較低調(diào)，這次也忍不
住跟裁判爭(zhēng)執(zhí)，表示強(qiáng)烈不滿。

    LL： Yeah ， but I don't think making a big stink about the call is
going to change the referee's mind.

    LH：我也這么想呢，大吵大鬧是不會(huì)改變裁判的決定的，還不如就算了，接
著比賽就好了嘛。

    LL： This reminds me of when I played baseball as a kid. Every once
in a while a parent would get upset with the umpire and make a big stink.

    LH：這不僅是你小時(shí)候打棒球的情況，現(xiàn)在也是那樣。美國(guó)家長(zhǎng)特別重視孩
子的體育活動(dòng)，有比賽必到現(xiàn)場(chǎng)，為孩子打氣。覺(jué)得不公平還會(huì)對(duì)裁判大喊大叫。
我父母只有在我學(xué)習(xí)成績(jī)不好的時(shí)候才會(huì)嚴(yán)厲批評(píng)。

    LL： Li Hua ， weren't you the perfect student？ I can't imagine your
parents having anything to make a stink about.

    LH：誰(shuí)說(shuō)他們不生氣？我上中學(xué)的時(shí)候，有個(gè)學(xué)期我的數(shù)學(xué)成績(jī)很差。我父
母就特別生氣。這對(duì)他們來(lái)說(shuō)才是件大事。

    LL： Well ， they had your best interests at heart. Say ， you know
what I want to make a big stink about now ？

    LH：我當(dāng)然知道他們是為了我好。You want to make a big stink？有什么
事讓你不滿意呀？

    LL： Where is the snack food？ You can't watch soccer without having
some snacks.

    LH：嗨，你們美國(guó)人呀，看球就非得吃零食。不過(guò)，這不是什么大事。You
don't have to make a big stink. 廚房里有好多吃的，你自己去拿吧。

    LL： Have some chips， Li Hua. Hmm……it looks like the U.S. is getting
creamed.

    LH： Creamed？ Cream不是奶油嗎？

    LL： No ， creamed mean getting beaten. And badly.

    LH：噢，creamed 在這里的意思是被打敗，而且是慘敗。

    LL：That's right. Say ， Li Hua ， why are you rooting for the U.S.
team， anyway ？

    LH：我為什么幫美國(guó)隊(duì)呀？你忘啦，中國(guó)隊(duì)在亞洲地區(qū)賽中輸給了科威特隊(duì)，
根本沒(méi)有資格參加世界杯賽。

    LL： Oh ， yeah ， I remember that. They were creamed pretty badly
- Six to one， as I recall.

    LH：沒(méi)錯(cuò)，輸給科威特六比一！別說(shuō)了，一提起中國(guó)隊(duì)的慘敗，我就傷心。
所以現(xiàn)在我支持美國(guó)隊(duì)，因?yàn)槲以诿绹?guó)留學(xué)，可沒(méi)想到美國(guó)隊(duì)也要輸了。The US
team is going to be creamed ！

    LL： The Czech Republic team is really good. I am not surprised the
U.S. is getting creamed.

    LH：美國(guó)隊(duì)看來(lái)是輸定了，我們別看球了。出去玩吧。

    LL： It's a nice day， Li Hua. Let's go out and play some badminton.

    LH： Larry，打羽毛球你可不是我的對(duì)手，說(shuō)不定會(huì)被打得一敗涂地呦。I'm
sure you'll get creamed.

    LL： I tell you what， Li Hua ， if you cream me at badminton ， I
promise ……

    LH：你保證什么？

    LL： I promise not to make a big stink about it ！

    今天李華學(xué)到了兩個(gè)常用語(yǔ)。一個(gè)是make a big stink，意思是大吵大鬧、
表示強(qiáng)烈不滿。李華學(xué)到的另一個(gè)常用語(yǔ)是to be creamed 意思是被擊敗。
